Future Motion, manufacturer of the Onewheel Electric Skateboard, has issued a recall for these electric skateboards after reports of serious injuries and at least four deaths from using the product. This is because it can lose its ability to balance the rider if its limits are exceeded or if it hits low battery, potentially resulting in the rider being thrown off. People who have the Onewheel should cease using it immediately, and either download a firmware update when it is available, or exchange it for a refund from the manufacturer.

What is Future Motion?

Future Motion, Inc., is the manufacturer of the Onewheel Electric Skateboard, along with a number of skateboarding accessories. This includes the original Onewheel and Onewheel+, as well as the more modern Onewheel Pint, Onewheel Pint X, and Onewheel GT variants. It is headquartered in Santa Cruz, CA, and has sold approximately 300,000 of these electric skateboards throughout the United States between 2019 and 2021.

What Are These Electric Skateboards?

The Onewheel Electric Skateboard is a type of skateboard that, as the name suggests, has only a single wheel in the center of the board, powered by an electric motor. It has an internal stabilization device that helps keep the rider balanced while they are riding it. The company offers these boards starting at $1,050 for the Onewheel Pint, with more expensive variants being offered for $2,200 and up.

Why Was the Recall Issued?

These electric skateboards were recalled after it was found they suffered from a serious defect that could cause the internal stabilization mechanism to fail if its limits were exceeded or if it suffered from a low battery. This meant that they could, without warning, suddenly lose balance, causing people to fall and injure themselves. At least four people have been killed as a result of this type of accident, with dozens more reporting injuries including fractures, concussions, ligament damage, paralysis, and traumatic brain injuries.

What Should You Do?

If you have one of these electric skateboards, you should cease using them immediately until a firmware update can be issued, which it is estimated will take up to six weeks. If you have one of the older Onewheel or Onewheel+ models, you can contact the manufacturer for a refund.
