Nestle USA has issued a recall for metallic mugs that were sold as part of its 2023 Holiday Starbucks-branded Gift Sets due to a defect that can cause them to overheat and break, resulting in a risk of burns and lacerations. Approximately 440,000 of the mugs were sold during the past holiday season. People who have these mugs should cease using them and either return them or seek a refund from the manufacturer.

What is Nestle?

Nestlé S.A. is a multinational food and drink conglomerate based out of Vevey, Switzerland, and is considered one of the largest food companies in the world. Among other things, it manufactures and sells chocolates and candy, bottled water, baby formula, cereals, drinks, and pet food. The company is estimated to have an annual revenue of more than $23 billion and employs around 270,000 people.

What Are These Mugs?

These mugs are holiday-themed ceramic mugs with a metal coating on the inside, with festive holiday patterns and Starbucks branding on the outside. They were sold as part of the following gift packs during the 2023 holiday season in 11 oz and 16 oz sizes:

  • Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs
  • Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug
  • Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug

Why Were They Recalled?

These mugs were recalled by Nestle due to a defect that can cause them to overheat and break when extremely hot liquid was poured inside of them, or when they were placed in a microwave. Making physical contact with an overheated mugs could cause burns, and the broken mugs could pose a risk of lacerations. At least twelve instances of this have been reported, with ten resulting in injuries requiring medical care.
