Soojimus, a manufacturer of products for children, has issued a recall for its CUPKIN Double-Walled Stainless Steel Children’s Cups after they were found to have unsafe levels of lead, in violation of the federal lead content ban. This potentially puts anyone who uses the cups at risk of lead poisoning. Anyone who has one of these cups should cease using them and contact the manufacturer for a refund.

What Are CUPKIN Cups?

CUPKIN Double-Walled Stainless Steel Children’s Cups are a type of cup sold by the manufacturer Soojimus for children. These cups were sold in twelve different color combinations, and had the word “CUPKIN” written on the bottom front of the cups. Approximately 346,000 of these cups were sold, including from the manufacturer’s website as well as on Amazon.com, from January 2018 to March 2023.

Why Are They Being Recalled?

These cups are being recalled after it was discovered that they contained levels of lead that exceeded the federal lead content ban. Under federal law, it is illegal for any children’s product to have concentrations of lead greater than 90 parts per million, whether in paint or any other surface coatings. Lead is a heavy metal that can be dangerous for people to ingest, especially small children.

What Are the Dangers of Lead?

Anyone exposed to high levels of lead may suffer from a variety of health effects, including damage to the brain and nervous system, hearing problems, behavioral issues, and speech difficulties. Children, in particular, are at risk of developmental problems and slowed growth when exposed to high levels of lead. Worse still, lead does not naturally leave a person’s body, meaning it can accumulate to toxic levels over time.

What Should You Do?

If you have one of these CUPKIN cups, you should immediately stop using them and contact the manufacturer for a full refund. You may also wish to consult a doctor if your child has shown any signs of lead poisoning. If you or your child have experienced lead poisoning, you should speak to a lawyer with experience handling product liability issues.
