Natierra, a seller of health foods and seasonings, has recalled two batches of its Freeze-Dried Blueberries after it was found they had levels of lead higher than the acceptable FDA limit. While no one has claimed any negative health effects from these products, it is still recommended to throw out these blueberries to avoid consuming them. If you experience any negative symptoms after consuming this product, you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

What is Natierra?

Natierra is a brand of foods owned by BrandStorm, Inc., which specializes in selling so-called “superfoods” intended to appeal to those who want to eat healthier. It focuses principally on selling fruits, vegetables, and healthy ingredients, as well as fruit- and vegetable-based products like smoothies and chocolate-covered snacks. Its products, including its Freeze-Dried Blueberries, are sold in stores around the United States, as well as online.

Why Was the Recall Issued?

Natierra issued the recall after it was discovered that two batches of its Freeze-Dried Blueberries contained elevated levels of lead. While the amount of lead discovered in these blueberries is unlikely to be dangerous on its own, heavy metals like lead can accumulate over time until they reach toxic levels. In addition, because they are freeze-dried, these blueberries have a long shelf-life, meaning they can be potentially consumed long after they are originally sold. The affected batches are:

  • Lot 2021363-1, Best By Date: 12/2024
    • 1 serving, 1.2oz (34g), UPC 812907011160
  • Lot 2022026-1, Best By Date: 01/2025
    • 1 serving, 1.2oz (34g), UPC 812907011160

Why Is This Dangerous?

Lead is a heavy metal that can cause a number of health problems when it builds up to toxic levels, including irritability, mood swings, abdominal pain, and neurological problems. These issues are especially problematic in children, where high levels of lead can lead to developmental disabilities that affect a child’s ability to learn and grow. In extremely high doses, lead can even be fatal, although it is rare for lead poisoning to progress to that point.

What Should You Do?

If you have either of the affected batches of these blueberries, you should dispose of them immediately. If you have noticed any of the potential symptoms of lead poisoning in yourself or your loved ones, you should speak to a doctor for potential testing and treatment. And if you have suffered from lead poisoning as a result of consuming lead-tainted products, you may wish to speak to a lawyer to learn about what legal options may be available to you.
