Zuru, a major toy manufacturer, has issued a recall for 7.5 million Baby Shark and Mini Baby Shark bath toys after reports of the toy’s top fin causing lacerations, puncture wounds and impalement injuries. At least twelve children suffered injuries as a result of falling or sitting on these toy sharks, nine of which required emergency medical attention. Anyone who has one of these toys should contact the manufacturer for a full refund.

What is Zuru?

Zuru is a Chinese based manufacturer that primarily creates toys, construction equipment, and consumer goods. Its toy division includes a large number of brands, including Fidget, 5 Surprise, Metal Machines, X-Shot, Sparkle Girlz, Pets Alive and Coco Surprise, among others. Its products are sold around the country at Walmart, CVS, Dollar General, Family Dollar, TJX, and a number of other major retailers.

What Are These Toys?

The Baby Shark and Mini Baby Shark bath toys are a set of toys made for children to bring in the water with them, such as in a bathtub or swimming pool. The regular Baby Shark toys have a button that can be pressed to cause it to sing the “Baby Shark” song, while the Mini Baby Shark toys do not sing. The recalled toy sharks have a hard plastic fin on top, and were sold individually, as well as in packs of two or three.

Why Are These Toys Dangerous?

The primary issue with the toy sharks is the top fin, which is made of a hard plastic material. When someone (such as a child) falls or sits on the toy, it is hard and sharp enough to pierce through skin and cause substantial injury. At least twelve children have been reported to have been injured by these toys, with nine receiving laceration, puncturing, or impalement injuries due to these toy sharks.

What Should You Do?

If you have one of these toy sharks, you should stop using it immediately and contact the manufacturer for a full refund. If your child is injured after using one of these toys, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
