Vornado, a major manufacturer of household appliances, has expanded a recall for its travel steam irons due to the risk of shock and burn hazards. The initial recall targeted 250,000 of its irons, but the newly expanded recall impacts an additional 1.75 million irons. What is Vornado?

Vornado Air, LLC, is a Kansas-based manufacturer of various household goods, including fans, irons, air purifiers, humidifiers, heaters, and fabric steamers. The current version of the company was founded in 1989, although the Vornado name traces back to the 1930s, when they earned their name for creating household fans. The company makes nearly $500 million per year in revenue, and employs more than 3,000 people.

What Are These Irons?

The Steamfast Home & Away Travel Steam Irons are, as the same suggests, clothing irons intended to be used to steam the wrinkles out of clothing. These irons were intended for travel, meaning they could be readily brought on trips or vacations. They were sold at numerous stores, including Walmart and Bed, Bath and Beyond, as well as online retailers such as Amazon and Vornado’s own website between January 2009 and September 2023.

Why Were They Recalled?

Vornado issued a recall for these irons after it was discovered that the power cord could become damaged near the cord bushing, close to where the cord connects to the iron. As a result, the cord could potentially overheat and burn users or start fires. It also had a risk of exposing wires when damaged, creating a risk of accidental electrocution. Thus far, 74 people have reported incidents related to this defect, including reports of smoking, sparking, catching fire, or shocking people.
