MGA Entertainment has issued a recall for 21 million units of its “Make it Mini” Mini Sets with Liquid Resins due to them containing potentially dangerous levels of acrylates. These substances can pose a harm if exposed to them through inhalation or skin contact. Anyone who has these sets should cease using them and seek a refund from the manufacturer.

What is MGA Entertainment?

MGA Entertainment is a toy manufacturer that was originally founded in 1979, headquartered out of Los Angeles, CA. It produces a number of toys and other children’s entertainment products, including popular brands like Bratz, Lalaloopsy, Rainbow High, Scan2Go, and Little Tykes. The company employs approximately 1,100 people and makes more than $9 billion in annual revenue.

What Are These Sets?

The Make it Mini Sets were model kits that allowed children to make small replicas of food, appliances, and other objects using liquid resins. The products were sold individually in plastic-wrapped spheres, as well as in sets, including “Kitchen”, “Multipack”, “All You Can Eat”, “Ice Cream Social”, and “Pizza Party” sets. Approximately 21 million of these sets have been sold in the United States.

Why Were They Recalled?

The sets were recalled after it was found that the liquid resin in the sets contained dangerous levels of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and isobornyl acrylate (IBOA), which are part of a class of chemicals known as acrylates. These acrylates are potentially dangerous to anyone exposed to them, and are known to cause damage to the lungs, kidneys, and liver, and can potentially cause nerve damage. Acrylates have also been found to increase the risk of certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.

What Should You Do?

If you have one of these kits, you should stop using them as soon as possible and seek a refund from the manufacturer. If you or someone you love has been exposed to these resins and started feeling unwell, you should seek immediate medical attention. You should also speak to a lawyer with experience handling product liability cases, who can advise you on your best possible course of action.
