Shoulder Pain Pumps Linked Glenohumeral Chondrolysis Diagnosis
Pain pumps used after arthroscopic shoulder surgeries have caused severe injuries to patients’ shoulder joints.
As early as 2007, the American Journal of Sports Medicine reported a link between the intra-articular pain pumps and Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL). PAGCL is an extremely painful, debilitating condition.
These pain pumps are installed normally by orthopedic surgeons during a procedure and left in afterwards. The 2007 and subsequent studies suggests that the pumps may deliver too much medicine directly into the joint which causes the deterioration of the cartilage within the shoulder. This typically occurs after an individual has had surgery on the affected shoulder. The condition generally affects the glenohumeral joint, which is the joint at the end of the shoulder comprised of the socket of the shoulder blade and the ball of the arm bone. The loss of this cartilage is what causes the pain in patients that hace undergone a shoulder and the subsequent use of one of these shoulder pain pumps.
This damage to the interior of the shoulder joint can sometimes lead to additional surgeries, including a complete shoulder replacements or a shoulder fusion.
The Most Common Pain Pump Devices Involved Most Often Include:
Accufuser® Plus Pain Pump
Blockaid®
Donjoy®
Donjoy® Pain Control Device
I-Flow®
On-Q®
PainPump®
Painbuster®
Stryker®
Stryker® PainPump 1®
Stryker® PainPump 2®
Some of the Medical Problems Caused By PAGCL Are:
Severe life altering pain at the shoulder upon movement,
Major pain syndrome while the shoulder is at rest,
Increased shoulder stiffness,
Popping or grinding when the shoulder is in motion,
Decreased range of motion in the affected shoulder and
Loss of strength in the shoulder joint, and / or
Loss of strength in the entire arm.
These shoulder pain pump cases are a particular type of “defective product” or “Product Liability” cases.
