A recall has been issued for Govee and GoveeLife-branded Smart Electric Space Heaters after it was found they posed a fire and burn hazard. A defect in the construction of the space heaters caused them to overheat, making it possible for people to burn themselves when they make contact with it, or to accidentally start a fire. People with these heaters should contact the manufacturer for a refund.

What is Govee?

Govee Moments Limited is a Chinese electronics manufacturing company that specializes in creating “smart” appliances that can connect to your home’s wi-fi to be operated remotely. These include devices like humidifiers, fans, water sensors, and kitchen appliances, among other things. Its products are sold in the United States through online retailers like Amazon and the TikTok Shop, as well as through its proprietary app.

What Are These Space Heaters?

The Govee and GoveeLife Smart Electric Space Heaters are portable heaters that can be controlled through its “smart” app. They ranged in size from smaller 9-inch heaters, to units that went up to 26 inches in height, and came in both black and white colors. They were sold between September 2021 and September 2024 for between $30 and $150.

Why Were They Recalled?

These devices were recalled after it was found they could potentially overheat during operation, resulting in a risk of accidental burns. In more extreme cases, they could even potentially start fires, especially if left near flammable items. At least 117 cases of overheating have been reported, resulting in at least seven accidental fires and one injury requiring medical attention.

What Should You Do?

Anyone who has one of these devices should immediately stop use and contact the manufacturer for a refund.
