Fortress Safe, a major manufacturer of gun safes and other related paraphernalia, has issued a recall for its Biometric gun safes due to a major defect with its lock. The biometric device was found to be faulty, allowing people other than those authorized to do so to open the safe. At least one death has been reported as a result of these defective safes.

What is Fortress Safe?

Fortress Safe is a manufacturer of gun safes and other related products, including gun cabinets, ammo cabinets, portable safes, ammo cans, and other accessories. Their products are sold at a number of different stores, including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s, and Optics Planet, as well as online retailers like Amazon and eBay. Their products are sold under a number of brand names, including Fortress, Cabela’s, Gettysburg, and Legend Range & Field.

What Are These Gun Safes?

The Fortress Biometric Gun Safes are a series of gun safes manufactured with biometric locks, intended to safely store firearms to prevent unauthorized access. These locks are secured with sophisticated electronic devices that are meant to scan a person’s fingerprints, allowing them to open the device by placing their finger on the device’s scanner. This is in addition to a more conventional lock, which can be opened via a provided key.

Why Are They Being Recalled?

These biometric gun safes are being recalled due to a defect with the biometric lock. Rather than properly locking, the safe would sometimes become stuck in the default open position after being programmed, allowing people other than those authorized to do so to access the safe. This has resulted in the death of at least one person, a 12-year old boy who was killed by a firearm obtained from a biometric gun safe.
