Bissell Inc. has issued a recall for more than three million Steam Shot handheld steam cleaners after it was found that they had a defect that could cause potential burns. More than 150 people have reported suffering burn injuries after the cleaners leaked hot water or steam due to this defect. People who purchased these cleaners should cease using them and contact the company for a refund.

What is Bissell?

Bissell, Inc. is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of vacuums, steam cleaners, and other floor and carpet cleaning products. The company, which is headquartered out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was originally started in 1876 as a manufacturer of mechanical cleaners, and later expanded to electronic vacuums and other similar products. It is estimated to make around $800 million every year, and employs an estimated 2,500 people.

What is This Product?

The Steam Shot handheld steam cleaners are portable steam cleaners used to clean hard surfaces with pressurized steam, with additional tools for cleaning carpets, windows, and other surfaces. They were sold between August 2008 through May 2024 for between $35 and $40 each, and were available from both physical retailers as well as online storefronts. More than three million units were sold over the course of the product’s lifetime.

Why Was it Recalled?

These steam cleaners were recalled after it was found that they could leak hot water or steam under certain conditions, potentially causing burns to people who used them. More than 180 people reported having products that suffered from this defect, while 157 people suffered minor burns resulting from these leaks. Fortunately, there have not yet been any reports of serious injuries, but the recall was issued anyway to address the issue.
