Iranian commercial plane crashes have killed over 730 people since 2003. An aging commercial fleet and U.S. santions have the Iranian airlines relying on Russian aircraft and black market replacement parts.

The average age of Iran’s fleet of aircraft is 22 years old. The age of the fleet itself may not be the problem. There are older jets in service arould other parts of the wordl but keeping the fleet serviced and maintained is more likely the problem. Iranian airlines are finding it a challenge to even afford to keep Russian planes serviced and properly maintained because of lack of government support and by government set airfares.
