Dorel Home Furnishings has issued a recall for its wall beds after it was found they had a defect that could result in serious harm to people who have them installed in their homes. It was found that the beds could detach from the wall without warning, potentially crushing anyone who happens to be nearby and causing potentially life-threatening injuries. Anyone who has one of these beds in their home should contact the manufacturer for an inspection and possible reinstallation.
What is Dorel Home Furnishings?
Dorel Home Furnishings is a subsidiary of Dorel Industries, a manufacturer of home furnishings based out of Montreal, Quebec. Among other things, Dorel Industries makes beds, coffee tables, chairs, mattresses, step stools, couches and sofas. Dorel Industries makes more than $2 billion in revenue each year, and employs approximately 10,000 people.
What Are These Wall Beds?
These wall beds are, as the name suggests, beds that can fold up into the wall when not in use, helping owners to maximize their floor space. These specific beds were sold in a variety of colors, and had optional additions such as cabinets and built-in lighting. They were sold online through a number of internet retailers, including Wayfair.com, Overstock.com, Walmart.com, and Target.com, among others, and were sold between May 2021 and April 2024 for approximately $900.
Why Were They Recalled?
These wall beds were recalled due to a defect that could cause the beds to detach from the wall without warning, causing them to collapse on people and injure them. At least 22 people have reported the wall beds failing in this way, with ten people suffering injuries that required medical attention. This includes everything from cuts and bruises, to more severe injuries like concussions.
What Should You Do?
If you have one of these wall beds, you should contact Dorel immediately to have the bed inspected to determine if it needs to be reinstalled. If one of these beds has fallen on you, your first priority should be to seek immediate medical attention, even if you do not feel like you have suffered any severe injuries.
